Complete Neopentyl Glycol Plant
Neopentyl glycol (NPG) is a white crystalline solid, odorless, and hygroscopic. It is mainly used in the production of unsaturated resins, oil-free alkyd resins, plasticizers for polyurethane foams and elastomers, surfactants, insulating materials, printing inks, polymerization inhibitors, additives for synthetic aviation lubricating oils, etc. At the same time, neopentyl glycol is also an excellent solvent, which can be used for the selective separation of aromatic and cycloalkyl hydrocarbons. Its amino baking paint has good light retention and does not turn yellow. It can also be used as a raw material for the production of stabilizers and pesticides. There are mainly two synthetic methods for this product at home and abroad:
1. Sodium Formate Method Isobutyraldehyde and formaldehyde condense to form hydroxypivalaldehyde at 30-35°C, a pH value of 9-11, and in the presence of an alkaline catalyst. It is then reduced to neopentyl glycol with excess formaldehyde under strong alkaline conditions. Formaldehyde is oxidized and reacts with the alkali to form sodium formate. The reaction solution is neutralized with formic acid, dehydrated by vacuum distillation, and the concentrated solution is subjected to fractional extraction. After removing sodium formate, it is cooled, crystallized, and separated to obtain the finished product.
2. Hydrogenation Method Hydroxypivalaldehyde is obtained by the condensation of isobutyraldehyde and formaldehyde, and then neopentyl glycol is obtained by hydrogenation reduction.
At present, most of the neopentyl glycol plants in China adopt the sodium formate method.
